Bethany’s international development work has largely focused on Tanzania, where she has worked since 2005, when she was a primary school teacher in Bukoba, Tanzania. At Kibeta English Medium Primary school, she was class teacher for Standard 2, where she taught English reading and writing, science, and math. She also taught Vocational Skills and Computer across other grade levels. While completing her master’s degree, Bethany worked on curriculum development and teacher training projects in Tanzania. She was part of the team that developed and implemented the Teaching in Action workshop at Mwenge University College of Education in Moshi, Tanzania. She worked on this project from 2008-2009.
Bethany currently works on several projects in Tanzania. Through Michigan State University’s Tanzania Partnership Program, she works with colleagues at MSU and Tanzanian universities to develop and implement projects related to teaching and learning. Her current work is focused on building pre- and in-service teachers’ capacity to implement playful and play-based teaching strategies.
Since May 2020, Bethany has been a consultant on the World Bank Teach ECE project. She contributed to the development of Teach ECE, a tool designed to help low and middle-income countries monitor and improve teaching quality in early childhood education settings.
